About BIO
BIO performs many services for members, but none of them are more visible than the BIO International Convention, the largest biotechnology event in the world. The BIO International Convention helps BIO fulfill its mission to help grow the global biotech industry. Profits from the BIO International Convention are returned to the biotechnology industry by supporting BIO programs and initiatives. BIO works throughout the year to create a policy environment that enables the industry to continue to fulfill its vision of bettering the world through biotechnology innovation.
History and Background
The first BIO International Convention was held in 1993 and attracted approximately 1,400 attendees. The largest event to date was in Boston, Mass. in 2007, with more than 22,000 attendees. Media coverage has increased as well, from a smattering of trade-press reporters in the early years to more than 400 reporters in recent years. Many of the session topics are focused on perennial themes: raising capital in the venture and public markets; FDA, USDA, and EPA regulation; and patenting trends. Growth of the meeting, and BIO overall, has paralleled that of the young, dynamic industry BIO represents.
2011 Event Recap
The 2011 BIO International Convention wrapped up at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. with a record number of partnering meetings, increased international attendance and participation, and panel sessions on the latest scientific, policy and business opportunities and challenges facing the biotechnology industry. The event drew 15,626 industry leaders from 48 states and 65 countries.
"The 2011 BIO International Convention was an enormous success, bringing together leaders from industry, government and academia who are working to solve some of the sector's biggest challenges," said President and CEO of BIO Jim Greenwood. "Bringing the global biotech industry to Washington, D.C. gave us the critical opportunity to showcase to key policymakers our industry's promise to offer real solutions to the most pressing global challenges such as curing disease, reducing health care costs, combating hunger, discovering alternative forms of energy and creating high-wage jobs. We continue to advocate for a policy and regulatory environment that will support innovation and inspire industry growth."
Greenwood interviewed Former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Tony Blair at Tuesday's keynote. Wednesday's keynote featured U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY); former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD); Governor Howard Dean and Republican political strategist Karl Rove discussing the implementation of health care reform.
