C.H. Waddington coined the term epigenetics in 1942, to explain how genes might interact with their surroundings to produce a phenotype. Changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence.
Chromatin remodeling – changes in packaging of DNA & proteins that control access to DNA by the regulatory transcription machinery proteins and thus control gene expression.
