诺尔丝菌素是由诺尔斯链霉菌中产生的广谱性抗生素，对原核和真核细胞都有抑制作用，包括高等真核生物细胞。它也被认为是对某些DNA和RNA病毒有一定抑制效果。

通常，它作为含有抗性基因细胞筛选剂已被应用于分子遗传学，通过sat1 基因的产物诺尔丝菌素氨乙酰转移酶对?-赖氨酸的?-氨基进行单乙酰化作用导致NTC的失活从中选出重组菌株。

像氨基糖苷类抗生素一样，诺尔丝菌素诱导错误编码；因此干扰蛋白质的合成；然而，它却是一个链丝菌素类抗生素。

Norseothricin contains both Streptothricin D (C₃₁H₅₈N₁₂O₁₀) and Streptothricin F (C₁₉H₃₄N₈O₈) components. 

Mode of action and Anti-microbial spectrum Nourseothricin Sulfate is a Streptothricin-class antibiotic that has an extremely broad spectrum of activity against viruses, bacteria, eukaryotic unicellular and complex organisms. Recombinant strains are selected for by the inactivation of NTC by monoacetylation of ?-amino group of the ?-lysine by the product of the sat1 gene, Nouresothricin N-acetyltransferase.
